I love Pinterest, but it’s no Google+.
Its visual format may lend itself well to the visual-oriented advertising mind. But seriously, how much engagement have you experienced on Pinterest? It’s really lovely for delighting the eye and making new acquaintances and that’s about it. It’s a big “it”, but still, that’s it.
Google+ is about discovery, learning and *infrastructure*. It’s being retrofitted into all of Google’s offerings. Wake up and smell the superheated silicon.
My hunch is that Google+ is going to grow deep and broad roots and then eat everybody’s lunch. For now, it doesn’t make sense to advertisers who want eyeballs, and it doesn’t make sense to people who want to know what all their friends thought about “Avengers”.
In the meantime, the very definition of advertising is going to be revolutionised. Even now, the experts are still thinking eyeballs and visuals. Wishing for the Golden Age of TV. Forget about that. Find the new reality.
